Hornby Island


HORNBY ISLAND, 30 sq km, pop 966, is one of the 2 most northerly GULF ISLANDS lying in GEORGIA STRAIT between southern VANCOUVER ISLAND and the mainland (the other is Denman Island). It was a seasonal home for SALISHAN FIRST NATIONS. The first settlers arrived to begin farming in the 1870s, and a shore WHALING station operated at Whaling Station Bay from 1870 to 1872.
