KENNEDY LAKE, 69.2 sq km, connected by the Kennedy R to CLAYOQUOT SOUND, is the largest lake on VANCOUVER ISLAND. It lies within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht, a FIRST NATION of the NUU-CHAH-NULTH (Nootka) people, who launched a major SALMON restoration project there in 1998. An iron-ore mine operated nearby from 1961 to 1969 and reopened in 1998 for quarrying (see MINING). The area has undergone heavy LOGGING. Two small provincial PARKS are located on the lake.
