KIMBERLEY, city, pop 6,139 (2006), in the PURCELL MTS overlooking the KOOTENAY R valley, 30 km by road from CRANBROOK, is Canada's second-highest city (el 1,200 m). It was named after the diamond mining town in S Africa. It flourished in the 1890s as a MINING centre and grew with the success of the North Star and SULLIVAN MINES.
