Klatsassin


KLATSASSIN, Tsilhqot'in (Chilcotin) chief (d 26 Oct 1864, Quesnel). He was the leader of the party of TSILHQOT'IN who precipitated the so-called CHILCOTIN WAR in the spring of 1864. Apparently fearing that European road builders would bring SMALLPOX into their territory, the Tsilhqot'in attacked a supply depot and then a work camp on the HOMATHKO R, killing 14 men. The Tsilhqot'in, about 20 in number, continued to terrorize the country for several months, killing another 4 people before...
