LULU ISLAND is one of the large islands formed by silt deposits at the mouth of the FRASER R directly south of VANCOUVER. It is now occupied by the city of RICHMOND. Surveyed in 1859, the low-lying, boggy island was designated Island No. 1 until 1863, when it was christened after the visiting American actress Lulu Sweet. The earliest farm settlers arrived soon after (see AGRICULTURE) and the island was incorporated, along with neighbouring SEA ISLAND, as the Corporation of Richmond in 1879....
