MARINE HARVEST CANADA, BC's largest producer of farmed Atlantic salmon, began operations in the province as Stolt Sea Farm Inc in 1985. The company was a subsidiary of Stolt-Nielsen, based in Norway. In 2005 Nutreco, a Dutch company, acquired Stolt and the company now operates in BC as Marine Harvest Canada. In 2007 it produced 40,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon, about half of the provincial total, and employed 530 people. See also AQUACULTURE, FIN FISH.
