Marpole, Richard


MARPOLE, Richard, railway engineer (b 8 Oct 1850, Wales; d 8 June 1920, Vancouver). After coming to Canada to work on rail construction he joined the CPR in the 1880s and succeeded Henry ABBOTT as the company's superintendent of the western district from 1897 to 1907. On behalf of the CPR he planned the development of the upscale VANCOUVER residential suburb of Shaughnessy Heights and built the first home there in 1909. The south Vancouver neighbourhood of Marpole was named for him in 1916.
