MARTÍNEZ, Estéban José, naval officer (b 9 Dec 1742, Seville, Spain; d 28 Oct 1798, Baja California, Mexico). He entered the Spanish navy as a teenager and was posted to the naval base of San Blas, Mexico; from there he accompanied Juan PÉREZ on his 1774 voyage to the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS to investigate rumours of Russian expansion.
