McWHIRTER, George, writer, teacher (b 26 Sept 1939, Belfast, N Ireland). After teaching high school in his native Ireland, he immigrated to BC in 1966. He lived first in PORT ALBERNI, where he taught school, then in VANCOUVER. He began teaching at UBC in 1970 and was head of creative writing there from 1983 to 1993. He retired from the department in 2004. His first book of poetry, Catalan Poems, appeared in 1971, won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize and announced a lifelong interest in Spain and...
