Port Alberni


PORT ALBERNI, city, pop 17,548 (2006), lies at the head of ALBERNI INLET on VANCOUVER ISLAND, 80 km west of NANAIMO. The site was occupied by the Tseshaht nation of the NUU-CHAH-NULTH (Nootka) before the arrival of the first loggers in 1860. BC's first export SAWMILL, owned by British business interests, went into production in 1861.
