Moberly, Walter

MOBERLY, Walter, engineer (b 15 Aug 1832, Steeple Aston, England; d 14 May 1915, Vancouver). He arrived in BC a trained civil engineer in 1858 and helped to lay out NEW WESTMINSTER the next year. He was involved in the construction of the DEWDNEY TRAIL from 1859 to 1865. As assistant commissioner of lands and works from 1864 to 1866 he located EAGLE PASS, built a trail from SHUSWAP LK to the GOLD diggings at Big Bend (see GOLD RUSH, BIG BEND) and surveyed the first road into BARKERVILLE.
