MUIR, John, miner, Sooke pioneer (b 28 May 1799, Ayrshire, Scotland; d 4 Apr 1883, Sooke). He was hired by the HBC to oversee the development of COAL properties on VANCOUVER ISLAND. After arriving with his family at VICTORIA in May 1849, he travelled to FORT RUPERT where he began digging with 7 other miners.
