Nass River


NASS RIVER, 380 km, rises in the Skeena Mts on the south side of the SPATSIZI PLATEAU and flows through the COAST MTS to salt water at PORTLAND INLET, 80 km north of PRINCE RUPERT. The river drains a 21,100 sq km watershed. The name derives from a TLINGIT word meaning "food depot," though the NISGA'A know it as Lisims. The lower watershed is the traditional territory of the Nisga'a, about 2,500 of whom inhabit 4 riverside communities: KINCOLITH (Gingolx), New Aiyansh (GITLAKDAMIKS), CANYON CITY...
