NELSON & FORT SHEPPARD RAILWAY was built by Daniel Corbin, an American rail promoter, to link Northport on the COLUMBIA R just south of the US border to NELSON. The second half of the name was a misspelling of FORT SHEPHERD, an old HBC trading post. The line, which ran up the valley of the SALMON R and arrived at Five Mile Point east of Nelson at the end of 1893, offered a direct connection to Spokane, WA, for ore from Nelson-area mines.
