NEWITTY was a fortified village at Cape Sutil on the northern tip of VANCOUVER ISLAND occupied by the Nahwitti, a division of the KWAKWAKA'WAKW (Kwakiutl) nation. It was the scene in 1850–51 of the first use of gunfire against coastal FIRST NATIONS by the colonial authorities. The village was occupied by about 3,100 people who were thought to be hostile to the nearby HBC post, FORT RUPERT. In June 1850 men from Newitty killed 3 HBC deserters, perhaps thinking that was what the company wanted....
