O'BRIEN, Kathleen, missionary nurse (b 1875, England; d England, date unknown). She arrived on VILLAGE ISLAND in 1920 and at her own expense opened a school and small tuberculosis sanatorium for KWAKWAKA'WAKW (Kwakiutl) children at MAMALILACULLA, then a principal village site on the island. For many years she was supported by another missionary, Kate Maria Dibben; they officially became part of the COLUMBIA COAST MISSION in 1927, and were legendary on the coast.
