OKANAGAN CENTRE, a farming (see AGRICULTURE) settlement and former steamship landing, is on the eastern hillsides overlooking OKANAGAN LK 20 km north of KELOWNA. A.B. Knox developed the first orchards here in the early 1900s (see TREE FRUITS), and a townsite, laid out in 1908, soon had a hotel, store, post office and school. Grape and wine production (see WINE MAKING) have become important in this area.
