OLIVER, town, pop 4,370 (2006), is at the centre of a rich fruit-growing (see TREE FRUIT) area in the OKANAGAN VALLEY, 40 km south of PENTICTON. It was created following WWI when the LIBERAL government of John OLIVER decided to irrigate the S Okanagan to provide farmland for returning veterans. Construction of the South Okanagan Lands Project took place during 1920–24, and permanent settlement followed. A 37-km stretch of the nearby Okanagan R was straightened in 1952 to control flooding....
