PALMER, E.J., lumberman (b 1856, PA; d 11 Jan 1924, Chemainus). Known throughout his working life as "Old Hickory" because of his tough manner, Palmer began as a brakeman on the Chicago & Northwestern Rwy in 1876. After he had been promoted to conductor he met Frederick Weyerhaeuser on a train, and the lumberman was so impressed with Palmer he hired him to work at one of his Idaho sawmills.
