VICTORIA LUMBER & MANUFACTURING CO was established on VANCOUVER ISLAND in 1889 by J.A. Humbird, a US lumberman and protegé of Frederick Weyerhaeuser. Humbird purchased the first tract of timber sold by the ESQUIMALT & NANAIMO RWY, 100,000 acres (400 sq km) of the most valuable forest land in BC, for $5 an acre.
