Piers Island

PIERS ISLAND, 97 ha, in HARO STRAIT near Swartz Bay on VANCOUVER ISLAND, was expropriated by the federal government in 1932 for use as a special prison camp for DOUKHOBOR inmates. The camp, which held as many as 570 inmates, remained open until 1 July 1935, by which time most of the Doukhobor prisoners were released. The island is named for Henry Piers, a Royal Navy surgeon on the coast between 1857 and 1860.
