PIPIT is a SPARROW-sized bird with a slender bill; it feeds on INSECTS and seeds in open fields. The American pipit (Anthus rubescens) breeds throughout the province in alpine habitats, with the highest numbers found in the southern Interior MOUNTAINS and the northern boreal mountains. It is not known to nest on VANCOUVER ISLAND or the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS. In winter it can be found as low as sea level and it is most numerous on BC's southwest coast, including southeast Vancouver Island....
