PORT ESSINGTON is an abandoned townsite near the mouth of the SKEENA R at the junction with the ECSTALL R. It was long a campsite for the TSIMSHIAN, who knew it as Spokeshute, or Spukshut. In 1871 a northern trader, Robert CUNNINGHAM, established a post, which developed into a small village. He gave it the name Capt George VANCOUVER had given the mouth of the river in 1793, after one of his fellow British naval commanders.
