Postage Stamps

POSTAGE STAMPS were used by the colonies of BC and VANCOUVER ISLAND for the prepayment of postage from 1860 to 1871. Under the direction of Gov James DOUGLAS, the 2 colonies jointly issued a stamp in 1860 worth 2½ pence bearing a portrait of Queen Victoria. Issued 20 years after Great Britain produced the world's original postage stamp, this stamp was the first used jointly by 2 separate jurisdictions.
