PRINCESS SOPHIA, 74.5 m, was built in 1911 in Scotland and belonged to the PRINCESS LINE of CPR steamers plying the coast from Alaska to Seattle. Early on 24 Oct 1918, as it sailed south from Skagway, it grounded on Vanderbilt Reef in the Lynn Canal during a storm. The vessel remained high and dry for most of 2 days but the foul weather made it difficult to offload any of the passengers to waiting rescue ships. At about 5:00 pm on 25 Oct the vessel broke up and sank. There were no survivors...
