PTARMIGAN is a chicken-sized game bird related to GROUSE, from which it is distinguished by its alpine habitat, feathered feet and white winter plumage. In summer the bird's colouring is mottled brown and grey. Ptarmigan nest on the ground. All 3 species occur in BC. Willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus), the largest, are found in the north at high elevations and in the WILLOW shrub tundra.
