PUNTLEDGE, a COAL mining settlement 5 km southwest of COURTENAY on VANCOUVER ISLAND, was the site of the No 8 Mine, which first operated from 1914 to 1916. A townsite was built here, then abandoned, then reoccupied after WWI when LOGGING activity went on in the area. The mine reopened in 1937 for several years but the community was mostly deserted by the late 1940s.
