QUAIL is a small game bird inhabiting brushy habitat on southern VANCOUVER ISLAND and the southern Interior, principally the OKANAGAN VALLEY, where it feeds on seeds and INSECTS. Two species occur in BC. The California quail (Callipepla californica), the most widespread, was first introduced in the 1860s. The male is distinguished by a black and white head with a prominent curved plume. Body plumage is grey-blue-brown with white slash marks. In fall, California quail gather in large coveys....
