QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND is a broad expanse of open water extending 175 km from the north end of VANCOUVER ISLAND to the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS. It was named in 1786 by the captain of a trading vessel after the wife of King George III. It is one of only 2 stretches on the coast where the mainland is exposed to the open Pacific without islands to protect it; thus it sometimes presents a hazardous challenge to mariners.
