RATTLESNAKE, western (Crotalus viridis), is the only seriously poisonous snake in BC. It inhabits rocky outcrops in the arid OKANAGAN, THOMPSON and NICOLA valleys. After hibernating communally all winter, rattlers emerge to feed on RODENTS, shrews and sometimes small birds.
