Rocky Mountain Portage House

ROCKY MOUNTAIN PORTAGE HOUSE was a NORTH WEST CO (NWC) trading post established in 1805 on the PEACE R opposite the present site of HUDSON'S HOPE. The jumping-off point for NWC expansion into NEW CALEDONIA, it remained in operation until 1814, when the company decided to supply Interior posts from the coast. The HBC reopened the post for one trading season in 1823–24 and there was another HBC post on the site from the 1860s to 1882, when it moved across the river to the Hudson's Hope side.
