Royal Roads University

ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY was founded at ESQUIMALT in 1942 as Royal Roads, a MILITARY college training officers and officer cadets. Initially it was for naval cadets, then in 1948 it became a tri-service college. It occupied HATLEY PARK, the former home of James DUNSMUIR. The government closed the college in 1994 but it reopened 2 years later as Royal Roads Univ and still uses the ornate Dunsmuir home as one of its buildings.
