SANDON is located in the mountains near SLOCAN LK about 10 km east of NEW DENVER. Named for John Sandon, a prospector, it rose to prominence in 1895 with the arrival of 2 rail lines, one leading to KOOTENAY LK and the other to Slocan Lk. Sandon incorporated as a city in 1898 and at its peak boasted a population of 4,000, 2 dozen hotels, an opera house and a popular red light district.
