SAVONA, pop 581, is a small community 44 km west of KAMLOOPS, where the THOMPSON R leaves Kamloops Lk. When FUR TRADERS arrived, the site was being used seasonally by aboriginal people. It was originally known as Savona's Ferry after François Saveneux, who settled in 1858 and operated a cable ferry across the river.
