Shrike


SHRIKE is a ROBIN-sized perching songbird, grey, black and white in colour with a black mask over the eyes and a hooked bill. In flight the bird shows white patches on black wings. The shrike is a predator, feeding on INSECTS, mice, LIZARDS and other small birds. It sits watchfully on elevated perches, then dives on its prey, catches it, bludgeons it to death, then often hangs the corpse on a thorn bush, barbed wire fence or tree fork for dismembering at leisure.
