SMITH, Mary Ellen (Spear), politician (b 11 Oct 1863, Tavistock, England; d 3 May 1933, Vancouver). She arrived in BC in 1892 and became active in various women's organizations dedicated to the cause of WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE. In 1917 her husband Ralph SMITH, then finance minister in the LIBERAL provincial government, died. Early in 1918, running as an independent, she won the by-election to succeed him. Subsequently she joined the Liberals and remained an MLA until she lost her seat in the election...
