SMITH, Michael, biochemist, Nobel laureate (b 26 Apr 1932, Blackpool, England; d 4 Oct 2000, Vancouver). After receiving his PhD from the Univ of Manchester he immigrated to Canada in 1956 to work with Har Gobind KHORANA at the BC Research Council. He moved with Khorana to the Univ of WI in 1960 but returned to UBC the next year to work at the Fisheries Research Board laboratories.
