STILLWATER, pop 146, on the coast 20 km south of POWELL RIVER, was the site of a major LOGGING operation run by the Brooks, Scanlon & O'Brien Co. The company started the Eagle River and Northern Rwy in 1909 to carry logs down to the water and by WWI was cutting 5 million board feet of DOUGLAS FIR a month and hauling it down 25 km of track. The railway ran for 46 years until truck transport replaced it. See also RAILWAY LOGGING.
