STUART, John, fur trader (b 12 Sept 1780, Leanchoil, Scotland; d 14 Jan 1847 near Forres, Scotland). A trader with the NORTH WEST CO (NWC), he joined Simon FRASER in 1805 to carry the fur trade across the ROCKY MTS into BC, then called NEW CALEDONIA. In 1806 he built a post on FRASER LK.
