Suquash

SUQUASH, 20 km southeast of PORT HARDY, was the first place that COAL was discovered on VANCOUVER ISLAND, in 1835. Some mining was done there until higher quality seams were found at FORT RUPERT and NANAIMO. Further operations took place in the 1910s. The name is a Kwakwala word meaning "where seals are butchered." See also COAL MINING, VANCOUVER ISLAND.
