SURF INLET, on the west side of PRINCESS ROYAL ISLAND, 175 km southeast of PRINCE RUPERT, was a GOLD and COPPER mining camp that was in full operation from 1917 to 1926 and again from 1934 to 1942. Ore from several different mine sites was shipped via a chain of lakes to the head of the inlet and then to a Tacoma, WA, SMELTER. The camp had HYDROELECTRIC power, a store, hospital and recreation hall, and a population of 200 at its peak.
