SYME, James, architect, pioneer salmon canner (b 1832, Edinburgh, Scotland; d 18 Apr 1881, Victoria). He came to BC in 1862 to join the Cariboo GOLD RUSH and worked a claim near BARKERVILLE. He then settled in NEW WESTMINSTER in 1865, making his living as an ornamental plasterer and artist. None of his oil paintings are known to have survived.
