Tahsis


TAHSIS  () , village, pop 600 (2001), is a SAWMILL community at the head of Tahsis Inlet, a long arm of NOOTKA SOUND on the remote west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND. The site was a winter village of the Mowachaht, a NUU-CHAH-NULTH nation, when George VANCOUVER and Juan BODEGA Y QUADRA visited it in Oct 1792. Its name comes from an aboriginal word meaning "passage" or "crossing," referring to an important trade route up the Tahsis R to WOSS LK....
