Telegraph Creek


TELEGRAPH CREEK, pop 83, is the only town on the STIKINE R, about 260 km upriver from its mouth at the base of the river's Grand Canyon. It is in the territory of the TAHLTAN people and Tahltan village (pop 350) occupies the top of a nearby hill. Settlement began with the discovery of GOLD in 1861, followed by the arrival of the COLLINS OVERLAND TELEGRAPH later in the decade.
