TELUS COMMUNICATIONS INC was created in 1998 from a merger of BC Telecom, owner of BC Tel, then Canada's second-largest telephone company, and Telus Corp, an Alberta telephone company. The objective of the merger was to create a firm large enough to compete with Bell Canada, the country's largest phone company. The new company, based in BURNABY, had revenues of $8 billion in 2005 and is one of the largest private-sector employers in BC.
