VANCOUVER PLAYHOUSE is a 668-seat theatre built by the city in 1963, when hardly any performance facilities existed for local arts groups. The Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Co staged its first production that year, Brendan Behan's The Hostage. In 1967 the company put on the inaugural production of George RYGA's classic, The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, and it showed a commitment to Canadian work from the beginning.
