WASTELL, Fred, sawmill owner (b 1900, New Westminster; d 1985). He moved to ALERT BAY at 9 years of age when his father A.M. "Duke" Wastell was hired by a FISH processing company to manage a box factory. When the factory closed in 1928, Fred and his wife Emma moved across Broughton Strait to TELEGRAPH COVE, where they established a SAWMILL with a partner, Alex Macdonald. The mill remained in operation to 1978, managed by the Wastells the entire time.
