Ymir


YMIR  () (pronounced why-mer), pop 227, is a former GOLD mining camp on the Salmo R, 28 km south of NELSON. The nearby Ymir Mts were earlier named after the Norse father of the giants. Originally Quartz Creek, Ymir was laid out as a townsite in 1897 by the NELSON & FORT SHEPPARD RWY. After booming briefly as a MINING centre—during the 1890s the Ymir Mine was the largest gold producer in Canada—it was partially destroyed by fire in 1904...
