Yucultas


YUCULTAS are a set of rapids between SONORA and STUART islands near the mouth of BUTE INLET in the jumble of islands between VANCOUVER ISLAND and the mainland, about 35 km north of CAMPBELL RIVER. With tidal currents running up to 10 knots, they are a well-known navigational hazard for mariners. The name, often pronounced "Uke-la-taws," refers to a group of KWAKWAKA'WAKW (Kwakiutl) who occupied the area.
