Samuel Island


Samuel Island (48˚49'00" 123˚13'00" Between Saturna I and Mayne I, Gulf Is). After RN surgeon Samuel Campbell, on the BC coast 1857–62. See Campbell Bay. The 132-ha island was pre-empted in the 1890s by Ralph Grey and George Rutherford. Grey soon became the sole owner, receiving a Crown grant for the property in 1905. He farmed there and, in 1900, married Winifred Higgs, who had come out from England in 1896 to visit her brother Leonard Higgs on Saturna I. Her sister Mabel Higgs also lived...
